Travelers Prefer Safety Over Privacy When It Comes To Pat Downs

Some people say they don’t mind the pat downs especially when it comes to air safety.
It’s a question of privacy versus peace of mind. And most people we talked to today were ok with the pat downs.
TSA officers say only about 3 percent of passengers ever end up needing a pat down and sometimes they do select passengers for random screenings.
It’s time to take off the shoes and the belt and the laptop. You know the drill. And many will go through similar screenings at airports all across the country. Passengers like Steve Aaronson who’s taking his first flight alone across the continental us.

The new search technique allows airport security screeners to use their palms and fingers to look for hidden weapons around sensitive body parts. The new procedure went into effect at the end of October and TSA officers say they haven’t noticed any delays in security lines.

Lita Trace is familiar with screening at airport security. She’s gone through the new body scanners.
Trace: “I think its just for our safety. I have seen them on tv where they over do it. So I’ll be picky when they search my daughter.”

Officers will usually only frisk passengers if they’ve set off an alarm at the metal detector. And if you do get a pat down, you’ll get an officer of the same gender. You can also request to have a private screening and have anyone flying with you during the search. Travelers we talked to say while it may be a hassle, it’s certainly worth it if it means safer travels.
Trace: “I don’t mind. I’d rather know we are safe in the air and get where we are planning to go.”
Aaronson: “I’d rather them do that knowing that my fight is safe. It’s a tough call.”
