Just in time.

The younger, hipper Lands’ End collection, Lands’ End Canvas has the swimwear we want this summer.

This collection includes cool mix and match tops and bottoms in bright colors as well as the traditional tones of white, black and of course, blue. Mini polka dots, nautical stripes and paisley patterns adorn halter tops, string bikini tops, bandeaus and more. Plus the bottoms offered run the gamut from teeny bikini to boy shorts and sweet swim skirts.

What’s more, there’s the authentic surfer aspect of this collection. From short board shorts to sleeveless rash guard tops and even tankini tops with support and coverage, these are the bits we want when wave riding, especially since they’re made with fabric that contains UPF 50 sun protection.

“Women will find that these modern new styles are rooted in the brand’s heritage,” Suzanne Bryant, vice president of Design for Lands’ End, said in a release. “Women will find a variety of styles with the same quality and value expected from Lands’ End, but with an updated attitude and fit.”

Five Materials Every Copywriter Should Know How to Write

If you’re new to copywriting, you may feel overwhelmed by all of the advertising mediums you’re learning to write. Whether you’re searching for a job as an ad agency copywriter or a freelance copywriter, these five advertising basics give you an introduction to copywriting.

1. Brochures
Don’t just sit down and try to write a brochure. Learn the fundamentals such as how the brochure fits into the buying process, if the brochure will stand alone or be tied in with other ad mediums and what the selling points will be. Get to know the five types of brochures and you’re on your way to creating a powerful brochure.

2. Print Ads
Spend some time learning about print advertising. When you understand what makes a print ad effective, you can move into learning about other print mediums like flyers, yellow pages ads and newsletters. Writing print ads is also an easy way to create samples for your portfolio.

3. Websites
Learning how to write copy for websites is a must for copywriters. Even companies that don’t sell products online need a website so having and maintaining a website is something every company should be doing already. This is where you, as a copywriter, come in. You can also use website copy as a SPEC AD for your portfolio.

4. Commercials
Television commercials help you learn how to write audio to match video. Creating a :30 TV commercial script is an excellent lesson in copywriting. Your script has to time out perfectly, you incorporate audio and video with your copy and you also learn about the use of fonts, graphics and other effects in the commercial. This is also a good time to learn about radio commercials while you’re in commercial mode. You can easily use both TV and radio commercials as writing samples for your portfolio too.

5. Direct Mail
Writing direct mail expands upon your new knowledge of writing brochures. Direct mail is not one specific package of materials. In other words, not every direct mail package is the same. Some may include a sales letter and response card. Others may include a sales letter and brochure. Getting familiar with direct mail helps expose you to a side of advertising that some agencies specialize in exclusively. This can be invaluable knowledge to have if you discover you enjoy writing direct mail.

Don’t stop now. These five aren’t the only advertising mediums you should learn how to create. They’re just a good primer to get you started.

If you’re a budding film maker or a movie fanatic then a trip to New York is the ideal place for you to spend a holiday. Most of the biggest movie producers have head quarters here so if you’re looking to get a foot in the door then the city can offer up some inspiration and the chance of bumping into one of the many industry big full lace wigs at a local coffee shop. New York is the best place to go for any film buff as many of the world renowned film festivals are held here every year.

New York is passionate about independent film so a trip to the New York Independent Film and Video festival, which was founded in 1993, is a must for any filmmaker just starting out. You can submit films to the competitions or simply attend the festival to watch some of the quirky and unique films on offer. If you’re a horror film fanatic then the New York City Horror Film Festival is sure to get you quaking in your boots. The festival, which takes place late October, early November was first established by Micheal J. Hein in 2001 and has grown in strength ever since. Some of the best horror flicks of the year are championed here and can gather a dedicated fan base that has been known to propel, otherwise unnoticed, films to the big screen.

Some of the most talented directors and actors have started their careers with short films so a trip to the New York City Shorts Festival will show you how to get ahead in the business. The festival hosts some of the best and most innovative short films from around the world so getting your piece accepted here can be a great starting block for your future career. The festival, which takes place in mid-September, is also a great way to spot exciting new talent before they hit the big time.

If you’re looking for some glamour and star spotting then Tribeca is the place to be. The festival was founded in 2002 in response to the attacks on the World Trade Centre and it features some of the biggest and best films of the year. This community conscious event draws in celebrities and industry professionals from around the globe and is often hailed as New York’s most popular film festival.

Regardless of the fantastic festivals New York has to offer the city is a great place to simply soak up some inspiration and meet creative people. Making your way to New York doesn’t have to blow your production budget either as New York City hotels range from the luxury five star palaces to cheap and cheerful bedsits. Whether you’re a budding filmmaker or simply love a good movie then a trip to New York can open up the world of cinema and maybe offer some inspiration for your movie making debut.

‘American Idol’ ‘Do Review Best and Worst Hair of 9 Seasons

The votes may be in for this season’s “American Idol” winner, Lee DeWyze (who has great hair, by the way), so we thought it only fitting to do a recap of the last nine seasons and get your vote on which contestants have rocked the stage — not necessarily with the best vocals, but with the best and worst hair, of course!

Here are the top nine most memorable hair Idols when they were on the show:

Season 1: Kelly Clarkson: Who can forget the original Idol who started this whole frenzy? When she first appeared on the show, we loved Clarkson’s shoulder-length, bouncy ‘do with chunky highlights. However, “since she’s been gone”, her hair has been another story!

Season 2: Clay Aiken: Maybe the best bedhead we’ve seen. Short, choppy layers were lathered up with gobs of gel to create an ultra messy, spiked look for this pop star dad.

Season 3: Jennifer Hudson: The Oscar and Grammy winning performer gave new meaning to the term “big hair” when she and her mega curls stepped on the “Idol” stage.

Season 4: Bo Bice: Rocker, hippie or biker dude? Bo could pass for any one of these with his long, straight strands, bushy eyebrows and make-shift goatee.

Season 5: Kellie Pickler: This country girl may have endured her share of “dumb blonde” jokes, but short, long, cropped or curly, her hair always looks smart to us.

Season 6: Jordin Sparks: Jordin’s long, flowing curls helped create her signature look. Although, straightening her locks made it appear more like a “battlefield” was going on. We say, “Keep the curls. Why mess with a good thing?”

Season 7: Jason Castro: Put this flower-child in the 1960s and he would have fit right in with his long dreadlocks and hippie style.

Season 8: Adam Lambert: Poofy, punked, edgy, slicked, spiked — you name it, this modern-day Elvis has worn his hair like it.

Season 9: Crystal Bowersox: While many wanna-be Idols notably changed their looks throughout the show, like it or not, Crystal Bowersox was firm about keeping her dreads.

Study Says, Mixed-Race People are Most Beautiful and Successful

Fashion News | Posted by jiree
jun 05 2010

The results of a new psychological study reveal that the British think people of mixed races are the most naturally beautiful and successful, reports UK’s The Daily Mail today.
Head researcher Dr. Michael Lewis attributes the results to a handful of reasons. In a Darwinian type-theory, mixing between such different genetic backgrounds can create a more “fit” person, who is more attractive as a result. And culturally-speaking, since there are more mixed race people than ever before, more people can identify them. Plus, mixed-race celebs like Leona Lewis have paved the way for Brits to think of ethnic mixture as more beautiful, talented and glamorous.
Conducted at Cardiff University’s School of Psychology, researchers collected a diverse sampling of 1,205 black, white and mixed race faces from Facebook groups – which were then rated by participants on a scale of one to ten by 40 female students.
Mixed-race faces had a 55 percent greater chance of being rated more attractive than either of the single races; and faces rated as “extremely attractive” were overrun by the mixed race submissions.
Dr. Lewis claims the study results represent a larger proportion than one would expect, based on the just three percent existence of mixed race people in British society.
Darwin actually addressed mixed race breeding in a paper put out in 1876, which featured the theory of heterosis, or hybrid vigour. In it, Darwin speculates that cross-breeding will lead to offspring that are genetically stronger than their parents.
“There is evidence, albeit anecdotal, that the impact of heterosis goes beyond just attractiveness. This comes from the observation that, although mixed-race people make up a small proportion of the population, they are over-represented at the top level of a number of meritocratic professions like acting with Halle Berry, Formula 1 racing with Lewis Hamilton, and of course, politics with Barack Obama,” says Dr. Lewis.
And, as evidenced in the case of President Obama — we wonder: are those with a mixed race background more inclined to pick stylish spouses?

Mission Makeover From Basic to Bombshell

Imagine you are out and about with your husband, minding your own business, when suddenly someone sneaks up from behind and asks you if you would like a makeover.
Humiliating or gratifying? For Connie, it seemed like both.
Somewhat reluctant — and a little embarrassed — she eventually agreed to a total transformation.
Dressed in jeans, sneakers, and a pale purple sweatshirt, with little makeup, it was time for our Mission Makeover team to work their magic.
Starting with hair, Roberta Inez cut three inches from the length, which instantly added natural volume, and snipped in some graduated layers. Before blow-drying, she applied a body-boosting spray to the roots, and then used a round brush to blow the hair straight, focusing on creating volume around the crown.
To smooth Connie’s skin, Inez applied a medium coverage cream foundation to the chin, cheeks and forehead. Because the natural oils on your fingers can change the finish of your foundation, Inez blended it with a foundation brush to keep the coverage consistent.
To play up her eyes, Inez swept a metallic gold shadow across the lids, and then lined both lash lines with a rich brown liner. After curling the lashes for a fan-like effect, she applied mascara to the top and bottom lashes. Because her eyes were the main focus, Inez kept the rest of the face soft. She dusted a warm peach blush to the apples of her cheeks and finished with a pale pink, lip gloss.
Stylist Jordan Feldman opted for a black wrap dress, which accentuated Connie’s curvy figure. The ruffled neckline and peep-toe heels gave the look a flirty and feminine feel.
The final result: a total knockout!
