Very pleased with the performance5
I originally purchased ADSTech DVD Xpress to transfer some old VHS tapes to DVD. Well, it was a piece of [...] that never worked. I decided to suck it up and purchase this substantially more expensive converter.

I’m glad I did. It has worked flawlessly, and the output looks great. I have had no problems whatsoever, and have already transferred 10 2-hour videos. Some outside reviews have complained about this converter not including a separate power supply, even though it does have that capacity. Instead, it gets its power from the firewire connection. I have experienced no issues resulting from this.

All in all, a great little piece of equipment!

Excellent Capture Device5
This device is a very good non-professional capture device. It seems a bit pricey but it is definately worth it. There are several reasons to like it. It is compatable with whatever operating system you have. This is because it does not require you to use their software and drivers. None are included, but don’t worry. All operating systems have some kind of capture software bundled with them. I use cyberlink Power Director. Another reason to like it is you do not need a external power device. THIS ONLY APPLIES IF YOU HAVE A 6 PIN FIREWIRE (1394) PORT ON YOUR COMPUTER. If you have a 4 pin firewire port, you will need a 4 pin to 6 pin cable. If you have no port firewire port whatsoever, you cannot use this device. Also, it is a high quality device. The quality hardware is the reason this device is so expensive. Don’t waste any money with cheaper devices. If you do, you will end up throwing the cheap one away. The cheap ones rarely work right. Three cheers for Canopus!!!

High Marks fro the ADVC-55 A/D Converter5
The ADVC55 was easy to use and did exactly what I expected it to. I was able to transfer VHS tapes to a Digital format on my Mac. I was surprised how much memory was required for the analog to digital transfer process, though that was alleviated with the purchase of a new external storage drive.

Customer Reviews:

OK but not great3
This unit charges my two ipods and my camera as I expected it would. It would not charge my friend’s iPhone through the USB port although it would charge through the iPhone AC adapter. It extended my laptop by 30 to 45 minutes — I had expected more. One thing I didn’t like is that when the device itself is plugged into AC, it will not charge anything.

Hours of power…4
I have a DS and a PSP and both worked fine with it. I had a little bit of trouble trying to charge my iRiver Clix via the USB port, but I think it might just be the software with the Clix. When my Clix has power and I plug it in, it just says USB connected but it won’t charge. However, if I drain all the power from the Clix then it will charge because it never goes into the Clix OS. It is what it is; portable power. It does tend to get a bit toasty when it’s being used, so hopefully you have a little leg room where you use it. It is actually smaller than I thought it would be: 5.5 x 3.25 x 1.5 (approximately).

It works.5
Some people don’t know the details about power supplies like this. This one requires a long answer.

The PowerSource will provide about 45 Watt Hours. It has a limit of 60 watts from the battery and 80 watts from the 12 volt input. It has a 100 Watt surge limit for a short time.

Translation: the run time depends on your computer and the existing charge level when you plug it in to the PowerSource.

If your laptop batteries are run down, the PowerSource probably will NOT operate it.
If you remove the batteries it may work. It may also work to charge with the laptop off.
If you run it with the 12 volt input it may operate your laptop.

The reason for this is; your laptop uses twice as much power to run if it charges the batteries at the same time.

It will work, if you plug the laptop into the PowerSource before you run down the batteries.

I tested my HP dual core laptop watching movies over the WIFI link. It ran 1 hour and 35 minutes on the PowerSource then 2 and a half hour on its own batteries. Same test, next day, same results.

This would be 4 hours on an airline flight. It will power a Zune or IPod for a long time.
The more powerful the laptop, the shorter the battery life. Your mileage may vary.

It includes a special plug that work on some airlines power jacks.

Many smart phones use a specially wired charger to charge from the wall and will only charge from a computer IF the computer has a data connection to the smart phone. A different USB cable will not help, unless it is wired special. A cheat that works on some Smart Phones is to plug it in then reboot the smart phone.

I recommend it.

Customer Reviews:

Average Performance – many limitations!1
Speedo Aquabeat Waterproof MP3 Player

I was, at one time, a competative sprinter, now train purely for health benefits…I swim laps in a 25 yard pool now (2-2.5 miles a day/5 days a week). I was just looking for a simple H2O proof MP3 player that was reliable and easy to use. I don’t require outstanding sound quality or a bunch of bells and whistles from an MP3 player. After doing A LOT of research and reading all the reviews on all the available waterproof MP3 players out there I settled on the speedo aqua beat and ordered it from Amazon.com, here’s my analysis of the product…

THE PLAYER – small, lightweight with easy to use controls and fits on most goggle straps. I swim with swedish goggs and the straps are a bit thin. This makes mounting the goggles on the back of your head kind of tricky because if you don’t get it just right, the player has a tendency to pop off when pushing off the wall or doing a flip turn (VERY ANNOYING)…the drag is negligable from the device while swimming along, but with any kind of a strong push off the wall, it almost always slides down to the base of the back of your head even with VERY tight goggle straps (also VERY ANNOYING)…recommend using goggles with a wide strap if you’re going to use this product. Of note, the internal, computer OSB rechargeable battery is a nice feature and the player can be used with other sets of headphone as a “dry land” MP3 as well.

THE SOFTWARE – easy to use, music can be easily drag-and-dropped into the “removable” hard drive that pops up on your computer…Note – you have to plug the player up to your computer’s OSB port and allow it to charge 1 full time before you can load music to it (takes about 2 hours to charge) and the single LED on the player will turn from amber to green when it’s fully charged. I was over-zealous and tried to load music on to the player within the first half hour of the first charge with no luck.

THE EARPHONES – These were the biggest let down in the whole package…they do come with 3 different sizes of triple flange rubber ear pieces, and while I have what I assume to be average size ears/ear canals, I could never really achieve a proper seal with any of the three sizes of plugs. These headphones REQUIRE a water tight seal to work properly…and even when you do get that seal, the minute you start swimming and turning your head to breath, the movement of your head or while streamlining off the wall makes the seal change and therefore VERY susceptable to water entry…BOTTOM line, they just don’t fit well…ultimately your ear canal fills with water and the sound is no longer audible. This requires constant “fiddling” with the ear pieces after each lap and severly detracts from your workout. Also, in order to get a good seal the ear pieces need to fit very tightly, this causes ear canal pain over time…not being a wimp on this one, I can certainly hack the pain… and would have gladly accepted that as part of the deal if that were the only issue with the earphones! Additionally, after 1 use, my headphones developed a short in one of the wires to one side of the earphones…I’m not holding this against the product in my “number of stars” review as it may have only been a one time incident with my particular Aquabeat…but be aware that the wires from the player to the headphones are VERY thin and appear to be quite susceptible to fatigue/failure or shorting out after only a few uses. ALL in ALL this was a DISAPPOINTING PRODUCT, especially for how much it costs…I’ve elected to return the player to Amazon based on the defective short in the headphones. By the way, Amazon is great with their return policy and it’s quite easy to do with a few clicks online. I’ve decided on trying the “bone conduction system” of the Fini-swiMP3-V2, and will order that from Amazon when my aquabeat is refunded.

In short, I would not recommend wasting your time and money on the Speedo Aquabeat MP3 player.

I’ll write a Fini-SwiMP3 review in a couple weeks when I’ve had the chance to fully test that one out!

Functional – but some limitations2
I purchased the Aquabeat so I could listen to audio books while swimming.

This player does meet my minimum requirements. The sound quality is good and the earplugs effectively block out pool noise. Speedo provides several different plug sizes to ensure a good fit and I can hear the words clearly and follow the lecture or story I am listening to. Also, the player fits securely to my goggles strap and has coiled earbud wires that do not get in the way.

However, there are some features that are missing or were badly implemented, including:

1. No battery indicator – can t tell if the battery is low.

2. No way to sort the MP3s numerically or alphabetically. I had to merge the mp3 files to ensure I was listening to the chapters sequentially.

3. Unable to fast-forward within a file — just between files.

4. The reverse and forward buttons double as on and off. It is easy to accidentally shut of the player — or forward to a different file when you just want to shut it off.

5. No LED display.

6. Slow USB transfer rate – takes about 8-10 minutes to copy 250MB.

Overall, I am satisfied but not impressed.

Well worth it4
This product is great. I had read some of the reviews prior to purchasing and it was really hit or miss. Perhaps it really just depends on what you are expecting. My expectations were for soley to have music while I worked out. I bought this to wear for my morning lap swimming. This was my first mp3 player of any kind.

It was very easy to set-up and I’ve even taken to wearing it during my runs as well with a regular pair of headphones. The sound quality to me is great; I have not noticed any difference between regular headphones and the waterproof ones provided while I am swimming.

The unit is very light and easy to attach to a pair of goggles. It doesn’t affect my swimming, I hardly notice it at all. Every once in a while the wire will lay against the side of my neck but after a couple of strokes it will correct itself and go back to where you don’t even notice it.

I did have an issue with my first pair of headphones having different volumes and then the right side completely giving out randomly with sound. Speedo was very efficient and sent me a new pair that arrived in a couple of days at no cost. These second headphones have not caused me any problems. I don’t know if it is because I wear a swimcap so the cap is pushing the headphones against my head but I will have to say they are not the most comfortable headhphones I’ve ever worn. Once I’ve started swimming they don’t bother me, but afterwards my ears are sore for a couple of moments after I take them out. Does it bother me enough to stop using them? No. Would they make me consider giving up on using the Aquabeat? Not a chance.

Great value! Great picture!5
I’ve had this TV for a 1 1/2 months now and it has been amazing. The picture quality is outstanding – the only way you are going to get better picture is to buy an LED TV, but those have their downside as well.

The built-in speakers are very weak and the audio level sometimes fluctuates a bit. That being said, if you hook it up to an external sound system you won’t need the built-in speakers.

This TV works extremely well with my cable box, DVD player and even my Nintendo Wii.

Highly recommended.

Did everything I wanted it to do.5
Was going to get a phillips tv but was sold out so I looked at the vizio. build quality looked solid and everything worked as it should. Havent had any issues thus far. Only thing that will ever show that the tv was cheaper then normal is the manual with its cheap photos but thats nothing to complain about.

Also to fix the change in volume from the speakers turn off the srs true volume. It tends to over correct the volume and thus creates the random volume levels.

VIZIO vt420m great bang for your buck4
I tried really hard to find a comparable difference between SONY , SAMSUNG, VIZIO on tvs under 800 dollars. I couldn’t find one. I stared at all three televisions for 45 minutes straight…not a considerable difference. For the money, you can’t go wrong. its the right balance of size, picture quality and price. I hooked up my ps3 to compare the quality between this tv and a 46″ xbr from SONY. I was shocked to see that this tv had by far produced a better picture (although the sony is 2 years old). Audio is poor and does fluctuate from time to time. I’ve had it for a month and cant say that I’ve seen any green lines or issues. If you wan’t a television under 1000 dollars, i would highly recommend you take a look at this vizio. I don’t think vizio can hold a candle when it gets to the higher priced tv’s, but when it competes in this price range…it excels

Inexpensive, Xlnt Performing Budget DDR3 SDRAM4
UPDATE, Dec 27, 2009

One or more of the DIMMs has failed, and they are going to Corsair on an RMA Ticket that was “instantly approved” yesterday, and I mean within 15 minutes of my submitting the trouble ticket, I got back an email with an RMA#…it was very, very fast! I am sorry to have to report this sad fact, but I suspected trouble 2 weeks ago when I started getting incomplete WU’s in Folding@home, many in a row…so I tried a LinX 0.6.3 stability test, and couldn’t get past 2 cycles, Red ERROR message three times in a row. Hmmm, I thought…try MemTest and see what happens. So that was next, and instantly the SDRAM started throwing error after error, the RAM would not complete a cycle at all…it failed MemTest, test after test. Bummer!

Sadly this is the 2nd set of Corsair RAM I have had to RMA, both sets purchased here at Amazon.com. The replacement set on the Dominator RAM (12GB) was stellar, no issues with that…so here’s hoping that when Corsair replaces this set that it will also be exceptional RAM, not something that fails in such a short time. After all, I was running this RAM for less than 3 months when it failed, albeit at a stout overclocking of 4210Mhz @ 1.65V VDIMM, 1.3V QPI PLL VCore, 1.3V IOH PLL VCore, nothing really stressful on the RAM, and BAM! Failure of at least one of the DIMMs, so back it all goes.

I will report again here after the RMA is completed, and I check out what I get back.-Wavey Davey – 12-27-2009

UPDATE – 1/10/2010

Corsair RMA Dept sent me some super-nice XMS3 SDRAM in exchange for the 3 x 2GB set that I RMA’d to them on 12/26/2009. All 3 DIMMs have the identical coding on them: “09520481″ which matches the coding on the box’s part number sticker, so these have been individually matched as a set by Corsair, a very, very good thing! In addition the box has a special splash at the top where it is written, with a big check mark: “Intel Core i7 Processor Extreme Edition”…which the previous set did not have on the box, another good thing from Corsair.

I have had them installed since Tuesday Jan 5, and they are working great with my overclocked (4210Mhz 24/7) 2nd rig, which is principally a Folding@Home machine, though I’ll use it for work if my No.1 rig is tied up with something important and can’t be interrupted. I have the RAM set in BIOS at the identical settings as before–just like the 1st set, and the PC has been running smooth ever since I installed them, no crashes, no problems, just a fine running PC. I don’t know how much better than the 1st set these are, but it’s apparent that they are more stable and running strong. I’ll report back here if anything changes in the long run, but so far so good. Corsair RMA Dept gets a big Thumb’s Up for sending me this RAM, all matched and ready to rock straight out of the box!

I have been running this Corsair DDR3 SDRAM for almost a 6 weeks in a new PC build I put together in October 2009, and so far so good. The timing is pretty relaxed @ 9-9-9-24 Clocks from the factory people at Corsair. I have it set, for my complete specs, @ 9-9-9-24-74 1T Clocks, @ 1.65V VDIMM in BIOS, with my QPI PLL VCore set @ 1.300V since I am over-volting the RAM somewhat. In addition I am running a 58% overclock on the CPU, up to 4210Mhz from 2.66Ghz OEM Box Stock, which is a sort of “normal overclock” for a good running Core i7 920 CPU like I have in the build… specifically it’s a Batch# 3849B202 CPU, made in late April at the Costa Rica Intel CPU factory there! There, now you have all my secrets, hah-hah! Well, just kidding about the secrets, it’s just that I have never disclosed this build’s inner workings to anyone yet, so it’s an Amazon.com 1st Run Production I guess, to be showcasing my Core i7 920 CPU build with this great Corsair SDRAM on board!

More of the build, it’s got an EVGA BL-132-x758-A1 motherboard, from here also, and it’s running an ancient BIOS, I think it’s all the way back to May, 2009, yes, it is! Anyway, it’s stable for me, so go figure, and I’m not changing it for anyone at this point. The SDRAM is running great though @ that lofty 4210Mhz overclocking, and I am going no further there, so don’t ask me about the BIOS settings, because I’m not telling anybody what *those are*! I haven’t asked too much of the SDRAM yet, even though it’s rated @ 1600Mhz you never know about those things until you push it, and the SDRAM is being pushed to the tune of 1608Mhz presently, a little tiny overclocking, running @ 2:8 to 1 Command Ratio, but so far SO GOOD! Sometimes RAM isn’t even as good as its rating, but this stuff peaks well @ 1608Mhz, and has given me zero trouble so far.

I haven’t had to run any tests on the SDRAM yet, other than the normal stability tests of running LinX 0.6.3 for 10X iterations for starters, then a longer iteration of 20X so I could put the build into the EVGA Stability i7 Club, which is a good thing to do if you have an EVGA motherboard and are a good enough builder to run the rig @ 4Ghz or higher overclocking, as I have demonstrated that the rig is indeed stable there @ 4210Mhz…so into the Club it went, this humble Amazon.com parts pieces build. In fact, the only thing I didn’t get for this build from Amazon.com is the video card, and that’s a BFG GTX 285 OC 1GB Video Card, which I scored elsewhere…you really don’t want to know that source, and Amazon.com would probably censor it anyway.

That’s the story on the nice Corsair SDRAM that I sourced here at Amazon.com, it’s an excellent buy at less than $150 for a 3 x 2GB=6GB matched set…and it works great, honestly it does! I am not putting the build on the David Letterman Show, Tonight, am I? Nope, didn’t think so…thus it has some bargain basement SDRAM from here that works a treat, yes it does!

Corsair I7 Tri-Memory Kit3
Would have been 5 stars as my recent I7 920 build came out real nice except the second shipment from Amazon for the same memory they made the choice to send return memory modules that had been inserted into a different modules outer package. So did not get what I needed and had to rma and refund as they did not have any in stock. Told to purchase from another supplier at a much higher price. Went to Frye and purchased for $8 dollars more so customer service let me down. Onward.

Owner since 19925
I bought these headphones in 1992, and unlike most of the rest of the stuff I squandered my money on back then, these were and continue to be the real deal.

My earpads have flaked off their coating like everyone else. But no need to buy new phones, you can order the earpads from sony.com or some specialty audio stores:

A Classic5
I can’t recall how long I’ve owned my MDR-V6 phones, but it’s easily been ten years. The sound is excellent, virtually uncolored, and unlike other top of the line headphones like Sennheiser’s (which are VERY nice and well over $150.00) these sound as good used with a portable CD player as with a well powered home system.

It was time to replace them since the cord is finally shorting too much to ignore any longer and my ears are always covered with black stuff and foam from the disintergrating earcups. I asked around and a colleague who is the audio technician on a popular TV show told me without hesitation, these are the ones to buy. It’s what he uses on the set and at home. I’m glad Sony still makes ‘em. Maybe I should buy another pair for ten years down the road…

My favorite headphones5
The Sony MDR-V6s were the first really good headphones I owned. After about 15 years of use, the foam padding was a bit run down. After doing the exhaustive search for the best headphones, I bought a pair of Sennheiser HD580s (I also own Etymotic ER-4Ps). Comparing the HD580 to my MDR-V6s, I would say that the MDR-V6s are better for two reasons. 1. The MDR-V6s are more comfortable to wear for long periods of time, and 2. The MDR-V6s have a telephone-like cord, which is easier to deal with than the straight HD580 cord. The sound quality was very good on both headphones, and about equal. I ended up buying new foam pads for my 15-year-old MDR-V6s, which made them feel like brand new headphones. I also bought a second pair of MDR-V6s, and shelved the HD580s for now.

Do not buy the MDR-600s by mistake. I have never used them, but I have read numerous reviews that state that the MDR-600s are inferior to the MDR-V6s. You can still buy the MDR-V6s, but they are harder to find. I bought mine at millionbuy because Amazon did not have them in stock. For some reason, the MDR-V6 product name at Amazon magically changed to MDR-600, even though it is an entirely different product. I am not sure why this happened.

The audioreview Web site has a great collection of headphone reviews.
