Really Eye Catching
This Nova episode is something I saw on TV last evening.I knew about Typhoid Mary from historical legend but knew nothing about the facts.And as the actress portraying her so bluntly put it her NAME was Mary Mallon,an Irish immigrant cook living in New York at the turn of the 20′th century.And as this show so properly points out was responcible for one of the most mysterious and often deadly epidemics of the day.Only trouble is that in some significant ways Mary Mallon didn’t come off as a particularly sympathetic character-she attacked Dr.Soper,who inicially informed her of her health status with a fork and constantly avaded the attentions of health service officials trying to track her down,while having killed three people and infecting others,unintentionally of course.
Mary was what was known as a healthy carrier.She was infected with Typhoid and was able to spread it to others but experienced no symptoms herself.There were in fact at least several dozen more like her but because of her unique case she got the most publicity by far.That was all compounded by the fact that dues to sexism and social Darwinism of her time she also became the literal poster child for Typhoid.
She died in the 1930’s,near 70 years old and having been exhiled for years on North Brother Island,the American equivilent of a leper colony.The story itself as well as that of much of Mary’s life is a tragic and sad one.But all sides made serious errors in judgement,and perhapes Mary’s lack of respect over the years may have been due to her constant denials about having carried the disease and lack of remourse for those she’s infected.Maybe the idea horrified her too much to bare and it drove her close to madness.She was afterall something of a caregiver by trade and likely resented having been blamed for causing so much misery.That’s my personal opinion but nobody,as this shows really knew what was going on inside her head.And if this is to prove factual I don’t know if we’d want to.So was she a victem or victemizer?Probably both but as such likely too frightened to live with it but to proud to admit it.But anyway this will prove very educational and eye catching.

Be Careful With That Home Made Peach Ice Cream!
This is another well produced NOVA offering that this time centers on the infamous “Typhoid Mary!” I’ve heard the name/ phrase all my life but never really knew it referred to a real person with a real story until viewing this DVD. Her story is well told through dramatic reenactments supposedly using the character’s real words, vintage photos, and modern day health and historical experts. And whether Mary was an unknowing victim or a vindictive villain is given fair coverage without reaching a real conclusion.

Mary, Mary, quite contrary (spolier warning)
Mary Mallon was an Irish immigrant who worked as a cook to several wealthy families. Unfortunately, she was also a healthy carrier of typhoid and most of the families she worked for became sick, some people actually died. As a result she was quarantined twice on an island for individuals similar to herself, the second time was for the remainder of her life.
This was a good documentary: it interweaved re-enactments, interviews from historians, mock interviews from the character actors as the real life participants, and photos from the actual participants and time period covered.
The documentary not only covered the life of Mary Mallon but the social and economic issues of the time that affected the outcome of her life so dramatically. For example, attitudes towards Irish immigrants at the time are examined, advances in medicine, class relations and biases, sexism, urbanization, etc Had any number of these factors been different the legend of “Typhoid Mary” may not have existed or may have been significantly altered.
One problem I had with the documentary was that it was biased and not objective for the most part. I agree that Ms.Mallon was subjected to prejudices which were exacerbated by her being a typhoid carrier, but as another reviewer commented it was hard to sympathize with her on some levels and in many ways she was not a victim but contributed to her own persecution. She refused to acknowledge she was a carrier of the disease in the face of overwhelming evidence which resulted in more people getting sick and in some cases dying. She may have refused to acknowledge this for many reasons, indeed perhaps its what kept her from giving up on life.
At the end of the day it will all boil down to one question for many viewers:is it right to deny a person their civil liberties in order to protect the general public? For many people I think the answer will be yes when that person refuses or is unable to acknowledge the consequences of their actions (although unintentional)resulting in more people getting hurt. The story of “Typhoid Mary” is tragic in that she was not just a captive of the Health Department, but of her own self denial.

A Showcase For Reilly, And Screamingly Funny To Boot!
Ya’d figure that classic zany comedy was dead. Sure, there have been ambitious stuff, but more often than not, a lot of today’s “comedy” movies are either blatent “gross-out” fests written for 12-year-olds, or the tired “let’s-make-a-satire-of-the-current-favorite-genre” formula. Truthfully, the last great American comedy for me was “There’s Something About Mary.” Sure, it was a stupid-humor film, but it had genuine laugh-out-loud surprises and, more importantly, heart. Basically, it was a sweet romantic comedy with slapstick thrown in for good measure.

Judd Apatow, whether he’s directing or producing, seems to be the guy who’ll revive well-done dumb-guy humor. All by himself, judging by the list of hits he’s thrown out. “Walk Hard,” unfortunately, was the least commercially success ful of them, and for what reason I don’t know. He did satire right, focussing on one character through a much-travelled formula, created a believable (and funny) body of work for the fictionally tributed, got a great director in Jake Kasden, and casted extremely well by putting veteran John C. Reilly in the lead.

This would be the most important thing, as few realize how talented and multifacited Mr. Reilly really is. Sincerity in character? He makes poor Dewey a sweetly believable guy who’d be really entertaining in any story he was plunked in. Creative? John C. can keep up with the rest of the brilliantly funny folks in the film. Most importantly, can he sing? Hell yeah! Reilly toured through Boston a few years back in a musical stage adaptation of the Ernest Borgnine everyman love story, “Marty,” and carried a hell of a tune (even before “Chicago”), showing he has the singing chops. In a more sane universe, Reilly would be headlining more major films, rather than being relegated to “character actor” or “second banana” status.

As mentioned before, this is satire done right – built around a well-rounded comedy character, rather than a series of sight gags (although the film has those aplenty). Kasden and Apatow took every cliche about the recent musical biopic craze and ran them through the Dewey Cox prism. What made it even more funny was the character and their viewpoints. It looked like every biopic out there, and made most fun about that.

“Walk Hard” deserved more box-office love, but it will be a long-lived successful film because of home video. There are worse fates than that.

Walk the Funny Line
(3.5 *’s) Judd Apatow’s `Walk Hard: The Dewey Cox Story’ is a familiar project. As the producer of `The Forty Old Virgin, ‘Knocked Up,’ and ‘Superbad,’ he takes another irreverent comedy, this time a parody of music biopics of popular music icons. Sometimes savvy, sometimes obvious, the movie is mostly an effective and witty trip through pop music history.

One of the best decisions was to cast John C. Reilly in the title role. Watching the film, I kept thinking Will Ferrell could have been cast as Dewey Cox. As much as I like Ferrell, his overexposure to such familiar loopiness may have made the movie overwrought. With Reilly’s fine performance as “Lefty” in ‘A Prairie Home Companion,’ they made the right choice. There’s a certain restraint he brings to the role that’s welcome and refreshing.

For those who have seen `Ray,’ and, especially `Walk the Line’ the referenced parody will be clear, but those who haven’t undoubtedly will be in for a fun time, too. It’s basically a rags to riches story about a man from the South who gets a recording contract much the way Elvis and Johnny Cash did.

On the down side, tragedy is given a lighter treatment. Anyone who’s read Cash’s autobiography or seen ‘Walk the Line’ will recognize when Dewey accidentally cuts his brother in half that it’s a reference to Cash’s brother who lost his life to an electric saw. Throughout the movie he’s haunted that he was the “wrong one” to die. They don’t exactly glamorize drug use, though, which shows Dewey always making the wrong informed choice. (Backstage he’s tempted by a band mate who says, “You don’t want to use this stuff.” Dewey always asks, “What does it do?” “It takes away every negative thought…” as if he chides.)

The real pluses come as Dewey goes through his phases of music. He has his early rockabilly years. He rocks during the early sixties, gets cosmic and hippie later, and becomes the familiar casualty of substance abuse and ego (with the usual infidelities) in his life. Some of the best scenes include his meeting with the squabbling Fab Four and an interview where he tries to reach the mainstream with a comeback family TV show. Fumbling with questions, Dewey reveals that he’s off PCP and his estranged children will be watching his program. Some family man.

While not a comedy classic, `Walk Hard…’ is more often unpredictable than not with a witty script that is delivered with a brisk comedic pace. It had me laughing loud and often, and I’ll bet you will, too.

Funny tribute shows love of music, and the talents of John C. Reily
While Walk Hard was something of a commercial failure, the film was proof that Judd Apatow and co. can do no wrong. Like Apatow’s previous productions, it mixes raunchy humor with a bit of sentiment. That the film does this while spoofing the music biopic genre is a feat unto itself. The film comes alive through the performance of John C. Reily. Let’s get this out of the way: someone take notice and give this guy an award – he is talented.

The film is more or less a parody of Walk the Line and Ray, both garnered with Oscar Nods and awards. To parody honest work filled with a lot of sadness seems at first seems like it might be in bad taste. But rest assured, this is a tribute to those musicians.

The movie is filled with some zany moments, including Dewey’s initial discovering of the blues, his brother getting cut in half, and a ridiculous confrontation with his father. The film makes intentional references to music biopics with the cheating, drugs and the so called “dark period” of so many musicians. These moments are funny and acted well, but what really drives the film is the music.

The approach to the music seems mostly inspired by Johnny Cash. But the filmakers don’t stop there. There’s Bob Dylan, disco, and even rap. The songs are really good, moving the story along while often being quite humorous. To me, the most humorous has to be “Let’s Duet.” They’re all top notch and John C. Reily gives his all. While Daniel Day Lewis picked up an oscar for his work in 2007, maybe someone should give Reily an award for his hard work in this film. I’ve loved seeing Reily in many of his supporting roles and admired his work. He shines here.

This 2 disc DVD, like prevoius Apatow productions, is chock full of goodies. The main draw to fans of the film will be the inclusion of 16 (count ‘em) full performances of music from the movie. There’s the obligatory commentary and a very interesting documentary on the music production. There’s a lot of hard work that went into this film and I hope it gets a bit more notice on video.

These brackets look great on the jeep and were easy to install. I didn’t quite know how they mounted since there were no instructions, but I just held them up until I found a match (like a jigsaw puzzle). FWIW, you just remove the two bolts that are directly below the 3 bolts on either side of the windshield and bolt these on. Remove the bolt on the underside of your factory mirrors, pull the mirror out of the bracket and mount onto these brackets. My half doors fit on the jeep with the brackets and mirrors in place too.

Finally … a great help for the novice woodsman
Few experiences do more to mar the outdoorsy afternoon or the 8 day backpack trek than stepping over a log and discovering your expensive waffle-stompers are filled with the leavings of another hiker. The problem is as old as mankind. At least, it’s as old as mankind after he began noticing what was between his toes.

The Bible addressed the problem, probably in the first surviving form, by demanding that people walk away from others with a spear or spade, dig a hole, and cover it. That method works well where the traffic is light. It works less well on heavily traveled forest trails.

Meyer offers 102 pages of suggestions, anecdotes and solutions for novices who want to experience the woods, don’t want to create a problem, recognize it’s a necessary body function and must be addressed.

I’d recommend it for everyone who plans a trip into the outdoors and isn’t already familiar with how to deal with the function in a way that’s not objectionable to those who follow. I’d make it required reading for those who go to the areas I’m likely to visit.

KEEPING IT CLEAN
I love the humorous, down to earth way this subject is approached. Originally I bought this book because the title and the picture on the cover made me chuckle. I’ve had it in my possession for at least five years. Then a little over a week ago, I decided to read it. To my surprise, I learned that this is a serious book with important information to help a would be hiker stay healthy and leave the environment no worse for the wear. Wish I’d had this book years ago before I started trekking around in the wilds. I found this book fast paced and full of vital information. Though I’m a grandma, this book made me feel like I was receiving counsel from an older wiser grandma imparting to me the secrets of how to take care of the intimate processes of life when venturing away from the accoutrements of running water and the other trappings of civilization. I recommend this book to all who like hiking, camping and otherwise messing around in the great outdoors.

A Masterpiece of English Literature
Ok, it’s not a masterpiece of English literature. What is there to analyze here? This is like arguing the merits of Benny Hill. For 8 bucks, buy this book. It has a few practical tips about where and how to deficate in the woods (hence the title). Great. The introduction is a tears-in-your-eyes funny anecdote on that topic that is probably worth the price. Then, you have a conversation piece for your bookshelf that will be appreciated by almost everyone. And, the author goes to some length to argue that this title is NOT vulgar (the book includes a useful lexicon for the word that is also worth the price). And, you’ll have something to think about the next time you take a hurried necessary behind a tree or abandon a diaper in the Wal-Mart parking lot! Enough analysis already.
