Wood Versus Aluminum—Which Baseball Bat Is Better?

For over 30 years, New Jersey has used aluminum bats for all youth baseball and softball games, as has most of the country. The change from wood to aluminum has raised issues about the purity of the game, the risk of injuries, the effect on college scouting and the cost of replacing wood bats that break or shatter.

In the summer of 2007, the Essex County division of American Legion Baseball saints jerseys is more valuable than gold in the Chinese culture and it is evident in how they use it in their daimade the switch to wood, following a tragedy in youth baseball. Since then, proponents and opponents of wood bats have gone back and forth about the pros and cons.

While the debate about the safety differences between wood and aluminum bats has raged on, there is no question and no debate that aluminum turns a game based on pitching and defense into a slugfest.

Just picture a wood bat as a kid riding a bike and an aluminum bat as a kid riding the same bike, but this time with a twin-turbo engine attached to the back. Wood and aluminum make for two very different games. Currently, the state’s baseball programs are playing the same game as most schools, colleges and universities in the country—aluminum all the way.

This spring during the Columbia baseball team’s high school season, the squad belted 30 homeruns and scored 228 runs in 28 games. During the summer, where Essex County Legion baseball switches to wood, they did not hit a single homerun and scored an estimated 35-40 runs (estimate by Cougars’ Legion head coach Bob Drechsel—there are no official stats for Legion ball) in 22 games, with no homeruns. While it should be noted that the players on the Legion team were not all the same players as on the high school team, with many seniors graduating, the drop from 8.1 runs per game to 1.82 has a lot to do with switching to wood.

“The power numbers are always going to be down because jam shots on aluminum can be a base hit. With wood, it’s a broken bat,” said CHS graduate and 2010 co-captain Stephen Tamayo.

“I prefer aluminum because it’s a stats booster, but the game is more exciting with wood,” said 2009 CHS grad Marcus McGriff. “Wood is more of a skills game. You find out who is really good with wood.”

In Millburn, where homeruns are harder to come by with no outfield fence, the Miller boys hit about 10 homers during the regular season. During the summer, with many returnees, they hit one (according to an estimate by player Tim Swanson) and saw a significant drop in offensive production.

“Power wise, the wood is definitely a lot less,” Swanson said. “Any hits to the outfield, you can see they don’t have as much pop and they don’t go as far.”

New Jersey made the complete switch to aluminum in the spring of 1974.

“Most of us were happy at the time,The cheap mlb jerseys created by this brand are very popular.” said Miller softball head coach John Childs, who was a senior pitcher in South Jersey when the change was made. “If you didn’t hit it squarely, the bat didn’t hurt in your hands like it did with a wood bat.”

While power numbers have been consistently better since the change, it’s fair to note that baseball at the professional level had been trending in that direction since Babe Ruth signed with the Yankees in 1920. His 54 homeruns that season were unprecedented at the time and forever changed baseball.

Since then, 50 homerun seasons have become a regular thing, baseball has become re-popularized by the offensive explosion (most recently brought on by the steroid age), and it seems that we’d all like to see a 10-8 game as opposed to a 1-0 game.

“When you go to a major league game, you want to see homeruns, not 1-0 games.” Drechsel said. “They have homerun derbies, not pitching derbies.”

But while no one is complaining about the offense, there are some complaints about how the runs are being scored. Aluminum bats (which are sometimes not even completely aluminum and are mixed with different metals and alloys for lighter, more aerodynamic composite bats) have a larger “sweet spot” than wooden bats. This means that there is a larger area on a metal bat that can cause a base hit than from a wood bat, creating the cheap hits off of aluminum.

“If you look at the way the ball comes off of an aluminum bat, I don’t see how you can say it’s not different,” said Miller head baseball coach, Daryl Palmieri. “The biggest difference to me is that [aluminum] makes getting solid contact easier.”

“In general, games average 40 minutes shorter [with wood], because balls hit on the ground are outs,” said Caldwell legion and high school head baseball coach Tom Lamont. “It’s like you’re playing 50 feet closer in the outfield with wood.”

Groundouts turn into singles, singles turn into doubles, doubles turn into homeruns, .325 batting averages become .450, and 2.5 ERAs become 4.0 when switching from wood to aluminum. The game becomes less about strategy (moving runners over, bunting, sacrificing, turning double plays) and more about outscoring the opponent.

“I’m not seeing the bombs like you see with the aluminum bats,” Palmieri said of summer ball. “Kids who are getting solid contact with the wood bats are hitting line drives and hits into the gaps for doubles.”

While you don’t need to be a scientist to see the differences, there have been several scientific studies done to quantify it. Recently, Dr. Ravindra Nuggehalli, head of the physics department at NJIT, determined that there is more force hitting the ball when a player is using aluminum.

To prove this, he took standard baseballs and froze them in liquid nitrogen at -196 degrees Fahrenheit for seven minutes. Then, he had two NJIT baseball players hit the balls off tees using both wood and aluminum bats. Dr. Nuggehalli initially hypothesized that the balls hit with the aluminum bats would explode or implode, but that was not the case.

What he did find was cracks of varying sizes on the baseballs. Balls hit with the aluminum bats lost more mass, had more cracks, longer cracks and more rings (continuous cracks). All of this proved that there was more force being generated by aluminum, thus making hits more likely.

“With the aluminum bats, there was a 15 percent increase in the change in the mass of the ball, as opposed to the wooden bats,” Nuggehalli said. “In other words, the result was the ball was going faster with the aluminum bat as compared with the wood bat.”

The same thing was concluded in an Illinois study conducted jointly by the NCAA and the National Federation of High Schools (NFHS) in 2007. The study determined that games with non-wood bats produce more runs, hits, at bats and last longer than games played with wood bats.

“The baseball is overall a lot better,” said Jeff Goldberg, vice chairman of Essex County American Legion Baseball. “It’s pure baseball, the way it’s supposed to be played. Close games, low scores and good fielding.” He added, “It comes off the bat, and it’s not even close to the speed of an aluminum bat.”

The study also determined that a wood bat breaks once every 35 at bats, providing more ammo for those opposed to banning aluminum bats.

“It’s a better game with wood. The problem with wood is that there is an expense to be burdened,” Lamont said “We’re playing now with kids who have broken six wooden bats.”

Though many players have their own bats, every high school team has some team bats that everyone can use. Theoretically, going to wood bats could cost more money than playing with aluminum bats, which never break. But with new aluminum models coming out every year, athletes growing in size and strength, the likelihood that a player uses the same bat all four years through high school (never mind in little league) is not very high. Add in the fact that aluminum bats can cost as much as $400, while wooden bats go for $30-$100, and there doesn’t seem that there would be much of a cost differential.

Because of the fact that aluminum makes it easier to hit, there are regulations in place to tame the metal. Since 1974, bat companies have made tremendous improvements to the performance of aluminum bats, making them lighter and stronger at the same time.

“They’re much lighter to the feel and it seems like the barrel is even bigger,” said West Essex Regional High School head coach Scott Illiano of bats today compared to bats when he played (1989 h.s grad). “I affectionately call them lightning rods. How can you ever make an out with them?”

The bats began getting so out of control that the Distributeur Officiel de la marque Nike en France. Toute la nouvelle collection cheap nfl jerseys.NCAA and the NFHS had to step in and mandate that the Ball Exit Speed Ratio (BESR) on all bats for organized baseball had to be identical.

A ball hit off of an aluminum bat being swung at the same speed as a wood bat must produce identical ball exit speeds, which would be slow enough to allow pitchers enough reaction time to field the ball or move out of the way. It was determined that a pitcher needs .4 seconds to react to a batted ball.

This gave those opposed to banning aluminum license to claim that there was no difference between the two aside from the sweet spots.

However, the flaw with the NCAA’s bat testing procedure is that the bats are being swung by machines all at the same speed. It does not take into account that aluminum bats are much lighter than wooden bats and allow a player to generate more bat speed, which in turn makes the ball travel off of the bat faster. It also does not factor in the “trampoline effect” which causes the ball to jump off of aluminum bats more dramatically than wood.

All of that leads to more offense. But are higher scoring games necessarily a bad thing?

Baseball is notoriously a game of failure. In the MLB, a player who succeeds 30 percent of the time at the plate is considered an all-star top-tier player. Ruth, arguably the greatest hitter of all time, succeeded slightly over 34 percent of the time at the plate in his 22-year career.

Proponents of wood bats argue that eliminating aluminum bats, especially at the youth level, would cause interest to dwindle and young athletes to abandon the game. For most children, failure isn’t fun and there’s no questioning that they would fail more with wood than with aluminum.

“The kids who are true baseball players and the kids who truly love the game would appreciate it,” Palmieri said. “They would just work harder. They would be used to hitting with wood.”

Enhanced performance alone is not enough ammunition for those against non-wood bats to force a change. The most likely catalyst for a change would be if the NCAA decided If you are big Nfl football jerseys buyers, we reallly want to cooperate with you and offer you the best service we can.to switch to wood, or if there were an epidemic of scary injuries that left them no choice.

Rapha jersey celebrates Tourmalet’s centenary in Le Tour

Purveyors of fine cycling threads Rapha have launched a limited edition jersey to commemorate the centenary of the Tour de France’s first visit to the Col du Tourmalet – the highest pass in the Pyrenees and perhaps the most famous climb of them all. The jersey is made from a merino-rich fabric and features a host of references to the original stage in the high mountains.

It was on 21 July 1910 – 100 years ago to the day (at the time of writing) – that the riders rode from Luchon to Bayonne; 326km (204 miles) taking in the Peyresourde, Aspin, Tourmalet, Soulor, Aubisque and Osquich. Since then the Tourmalet, which tops out at 2,115m, has been included in the Tour more than any other col,You may be thinking that teaching yourself mlb jerseys is the most difficult thing in the world to do. the riders heading up it twice this year.

“Parfaitement The cheap mlb jerseys created by this brand are very popular.passable” embroidered across the chest and the ‘A Steines’ signature on the right sleeve refer to a message sent to Tour organiser Henri Desgrange by side-kick Alphonse Steines. In the winter before the 1910 race, Steines had been sent to check out the suitability of the Tourmalet for inclusion in the route.

“When I started researching the 1910 story, I was bowled over by it’s richness,” said jersey designer Ultan Coyle, who rode the stage himself earlier this year. “The most striking part for me was Alphonse Steines’ recce of the Tourmalet. His car could only get within 3km of the summit discount nfl jerseys online, you will save a lot of money and have good things.due to thick snow. He continued on foot regardless and ended up having to be rescued off the mountain by a search party.

“Once back to civilisation he sent the telegram to Henri Desgrange saying, ‘Crossed Tourmalet. Very good road. Perfectly passable. Steines.’ So for me the embroidered A Steines signature is what it’s Swagelok® Pfa Valve feature high-purity PFA material with low extractables for chemical resistance, Swagelok PFA tube fall about. He signed off the mountain.”

There’s a representation of the telegram inside a rear pocket too, an embroidered crest of the Hautes-Pyrénées department around the back, and on the left arm there’s an image of the statue to the early Tour de France pioneers that stands at the top of the Tourmalet.

Made from 39% merino wool and 61% polyester, the jersey feels soft and comfy next to your skin and it wicks sweat away well. It holds its shape better than pure wool too. It comes in a classic slim fit but is cut a little longer than usual at the front so you can wear it off the bike. The ribbed collar and cuffs and the metal zip give a retro feel, while a silicone gripper at the hem adds a touch of modern practicality. You get three pockets in the lower back plus a really useful inner sleeve for your mini-pump and an additional zipped pocket for your valuables.

Washing isn’t a problem: it goes through the machine just fine and you can even lob it in the dryer on a low heat.

By Chris Fusciardi
Sports Editor

Sports can often provide an example of the good things – and the bad – that permeate our society.

For children and teenagers, sports can help teach selflessness, teamwork, hard work, dedication, respect and good sportsmanship.

Occasionally, some athletes reach professional levels and lose these traits.

More often I would argue, so called ‘fans’ forget basic ideas of good sportsmanship and respect as it relates to If you are determined to purchase Custom jerseys, then you will want to do your research to know what to look for in fake ones.opposing discount nfl jerseys online, you will save a lot of money and have good things.teams and their followers.

Some hardcore sports fans can even place sporting events at a higher level of importance than real world problems, or at least ignore those problems in favor of Sportscenter and Mike and Mike in the Morning.

This ‘good’ and ‘bad’ was on display in last week’s MLB All Star game.

I’ll admit two of my least favorite teams in all of baseball are the Boston Red Sox and New York Yankees. The media attention and hype these teams get simply because of their location often overshadows the quality of other teams in smaller markets.

Yet in an All Star competition – where the best of the best are on display – it was disheartening to hear the reaction of the Anaheim crowd when Boston and New York players were announced.

Instead of paying respect to the players and offering each at least a cursory applause as recognition of their achievement, each and every one of these players were loudly booed.

If anything it was something I expected from the fans, and that’s a sad indictment of crowd behavior in today’s sports climate.

But it’s disappointing when in an exhibition contest honoring the amazing accomplishments these players have achieved, fans can’t simply give a little recognition to the players.

This, though, is simply Swagelok® Pfa Valve feature high-purity PFA material with low extractables for chemical resistance, Swagelok PFA tube fone example of where good sportsmanship and respect has slipped away from the typical fan experience.

Yet I had hardly gotten my complaints out of my mouth to my wife, when Fox and MLB showed just how sports can illustrate all that is good about society.

Through a lengthy process, each team selected one ‘All Star Among Us’ from their area to represent the team as MLB – in conjunction with People Magazine – paid tribute and recognized these individuals for the good things they do for the world and their community.

Watching the ceremony as each ‘All-Star’ had their picture shown on national TV and worldwide celebrities talked about the value of what they did, I thought it was a great way to recognize the sacrifices of these people.

MLB even brought all 30 people to Anaheim, giving them jerseys of the teams they were chosen from and honored them in the middle of the field after the All Star rosters were announced.

That would have been more than enough.

The touching part, though, was after Harrison Ford, Julia Roberts et al had spoken about what these individuals did, all 70-plus MLB All Star’s and managers moved to the center of the diamond, hugging and giving thanks to the everyday people who deserved recognition For the sake of your health, it is necessary for you to buy a discount cheap rockies jerseys.but never sought it out.

“You are my hero,” Alex Rodriguez of the Yankees said to Minnesota Twins representative Bob Bartwell, a paraplegic who founded a Christian youth ranch and The National Wheelchair Sports and Recreation Camp while finding time to complete 100 wheelchair marathons.

“I always say that pain, style and disappointment is inevitable, but misery is optional,” Bartwell said after the All-Star game. “This is just a big boost to all of us to go back home to our community and inspire other people.”

These heroes didn’t start non-profit organizations or donate their time for recognition, but because they thought it was the right thing to do.

If only one out of every 10,000 people who watched that got a newfound appreciation for helping others, that could mean an additional 1,000 people country wide volunteering in their communities, starting non-profit’s or becoming active in local charities and assistance programs for those less fortunate.

Excessive focus on sports can lead to many of the worst attributes in society such as self-centeredness, a belief in entitlement and a lack of understanding of what is truly important.

What MLB did with this showcase of everyday All-Stars was to show that they cared, they appreciated and they were thankful for everything these individuals do outside of the sports world.

Maybe, one day, these values the ‘All-Stars Among Us’ hope to build outside the ball parks will once again become the norm for player and fan actions inside as well.

Adding Value to the Dairy with Ice Cream

EPHRATA, Pa. — July was officially declared Ice-Cream Month and the third Sunday in July National Ice-Cream Day, according to a 1984 proclamation by then-President Ronald Reagan. The heat waves of July coincide perfectly with one of America’s favorite family pastimes — the pursuit of the best ice-cream cone. To celebrate ice-cream day, we looked at four dairy farms involved in the ice-cream or gelato business, and some of the challenges and operations on each farm.

Kilby Cream
In Maryland’s Cecil County, the Kilby family runs a retail ice-cream operation, called Kilby Cream, that started in 2005. Just a small fraction of the milk produced by their 500 cows goes into their ice-cream operation, but the extra income has helped pay bills.
The Kilbys have been dairying for generations, and of the 50,000 pounds of milk they get every four milkings, most is sold to the Maryland-Virginia Milk Producers Cooperative. But about eight years ago, when milk prices were very low, it was a family decision to get into direct marketing by opening an ice-cream store — to add value to their milk, said Lisa Kilby, and “to take control of our product.” Located near major highway 95, they felt an on-farm store could easily draw customers.
Several members of the family are involved in the on-farm ice-cream business. Besides her husband, Brian, Lisa’s mother-in-law, Phyllis, takes care of marketing and bookkeeping; and sister-in-law, Megan, handles the retail employees and the website. Lisa is in charge of the ice-cream manufacturing and processing at the farm.
Kilby Cream store is located at their second, smaller 188-acre property two miles down the road from the main farm, “because it is quieter,” said Lisa. “On a busy Sunday, we can get 400 customers,” she added.
Making ice-cream at the store itself soon became too cramped and too inconveniently located for their more recent venture into milk-bottling. So about two years ago, they upgraded and built a larger production facility at their main 280-acre farm closer to where the cows are milked.
This past April, the Kilbys switched from a 15-gallon to a 200-gallon pasteurizing capacity and began bottling their own milk for direct sale. While the ice-cream is made from mostly Holstein milk, the bottled milk comes from their smaller herd of Jerseys.
With the new facility, Lisa is also busy working on new products like butter, and especially cultured foods like drinkable yogurts, buttermilk and cheeses. “If you could do something with dairy, we want to do it,” she said.
With their huge volume of milk production, the Kilbys have a lot of room for potential expansion. Last year Megan attended a conference in Rhode Island on home dairy delivery. This fall, the Kilbys will begin home deliveries of their bottled milk, ice-cream and other dairy products. Utilizing the two trucks they already own, the Kilbys are planning a delivery route through Philadelphia and Baltimore, both located 45 minutes away. They’ll charge retail milk price plus a delivery fee.

Hopkins Farm Creamery
Four generations of the Hopkins family have farmed at Green Acres Farm in Delaware’s Sussex County, not far from the popular beach town of Lewes, Del. The farm is also the site of Hopkins Farm Creamery, the family’s ice-cream store which opened in 2007.
Affable 31-year-old Walter “Burli” Hopkins, Jr., his father and 91-year-old grandfather work together closely on the farm’s operation, which milks 550 cows three times a day for sales of hormone-free milk to Land O’Lakes, and includes nearly 1,000 acres (some of it rented). Although young Burli started the ice-cream operation, it was his dad’s idea to open the on-farm creamery a few years ago when they were going over their budget and discussing the farm’s 5- and 10-year plans.
The family was facing intense development pressure because of the high-demand real estate and encroaching development in their area. They discussed the option of selling everything and moving out West, possibly to Wisconsin, to start a new dairy, or the possibility of downsizing and doing something in agritourism to try to work with the large volume of nearby tourists.
They decided to stay, and Burli spent the next five years doing research and making a business plan for an ice-cream parlor. Now in their third year of retailing ice cream, Burli said he never imagined the ice-cream parlor would “get so big so fast,” but it did. Situated along Route 9, a main road to the shore destination only 20 minutes away, the ice-cream parlor has a ready and willing stream of customers, the vast majority being tourists. Originally, Burli budgeted for two fulltime employees and bought two registers. Within a short time, three more registers were purchased, so that each of five walk-up customer windows was active, and now the creamery is up to 18 employees.
“I don’t sleep much,” said Burli, about closing up the parlor after it closes at 11 p.m. each night. Since serving ice-cream generally attracts a teenaged work force, Burli said coordinating their work schedules with staff’s busy activities “is a logistical nightmare.” His fiancee manages the creamery staff and scheduling, and he works on the dairy farm during the day.
Besides 26 flavors of ice-cream cones, the creamery sells milkshakes, banana splits, sundaes, Italian ices, and root beer floats throughout the season, which runs from April to mid-December. Rather than building a new store, to keep the business economical, Burli refinished an old milkhouse, putting in walk-in windows rather than a walk-in store. Having a facility that would have allowed the public inside would have created a whole new level of permitting, zoning and building that the family wasn’t interested in, he said.
A big concern at the farm was the potential odor and flies emanating from such a large dairy herd just 40 feet from the ice-cream parlor. “I do everything I can to prevent these problems from developing,” said Burli. “It’s mostly a manure management issue.”
On the creamery website, Burli’s concern about creating a positive customer experience comes through in an online letter he writes to customers: “Sometimes the air smells just enough The cheap mlb jerseys created by this brand are very popular.to give visitors a pleasant sense of authentic cow farming environment. Other times, depending on wind direction, it may seem like too much for some. We do our utmost to keep it to a minimum.”
“While we appreciate that farm odors may not always be the choice for a place to eat an ice-cream treat or dessert, we urge you nonetheless to try us. Almost everyone who comes here once, returns.”
But getting close-up to the cows is all part of the visitors’ positive experience too. “You have to have good fences for cows,” Burli laughed, “but you need really good fences for people.” If customers are at the farm during the evening, he said they’ll watch him herd the springing heifers across the road between the pasture and the barn. Customers have told him they were delighted to watch a calf being born, or to see a newborn calf with the herd.

The Gelato Niche
At Wholesome Dairy Farms in Berks County, Pa., the grass and spring water flowing through the farm helps produce the 500 gallons of milk each week purchased by Capogiro Gelato Artisans to make “gelato,” a creamy Italian ice-cream novelty.
Two years ago, veterinarian Mark Lopez, and his wife, Elizabeth, also a veterinarian, seized an opportunity to move back from Texas to Lopez’s uncle’s property to start Wholesome Dairy Farms with 40 Ayrshire cows, along with a ton of hard work, and the idea of direct-marketing raw milk to local consumers. The milk that goes to Capogiro, a Philadelphia gelato company, is just a small percentage of the milk sold at the farm.
Last fall, with his on-farm store already selling bottled milk under Pennsylvania’s raw milk permit system, Lopez was approached by Stephanie and John Reitano, owners of Capogiro. They had heard about his farm through the Fair Food Foundation in Philadelphia, and when they visited were pleased by Lopez’s grassfed herd and the quality of his milk.
Since then, to supply their four Philadelphia gelato retail stores and wholesale customers with enough product, Capogiro drives two bulk tanks with chillers loaded onto a box van to the farm once a week to get the milk. They’d like to buy more, Lopez said, but at present time are limited by the capacity of the two tanks which fit on their truck.
With gelato flavors like Fall’s Black Walnut, Mascarpone and Fig, Nocciola, and Lemon Opal Basil Sorbetto, the owners of Capogiro make sure that their gelato utilizes in-season produce grown by local farmers, making small batches each day in true artisan fashion.
Lopez is continually looking to grow his direct-market business. What milk he doesn’t sell The hottest selling saints jerseys changes frequently over time. When one player has a great month or a great year, he’s likely to vaufor gelato or direct-marketing goes to Land O’Lakes, and he’d like to increase the direct-sale percentage. Initially he had imagined that if he provided a top-notch quality milk, it would sell itself.
“I didn’t realize I would have to do this much marketing,” he said.
But last year, as Lopez struggled with low milk prices, he decided to “double-down” and work harder at direct-marketing as well as get more diversity into the farm’s products. And it has paid off.
This year has been a boost. Lopez has developed new relationships with a growing number of stores, markets and customers who are now buying Wholesome Dairy Farm milk. He already sells some meats, eggs and vegetables at the on-farm store, but Lopez’s next diversifying project, which he plans to begin this fall, is making cheeses from his Ayrshire herd.

Lapp Valley Farm
A veteran ice-cream making family, Benuel and Lena Lapp started hand-cranking homemade ice-cream around 1975 as a ministry. In the beginning, their small ice-cream operation was located on the top floor of a barn at their 60-acre farm in New Holland, Pa. As the years passed, and the facilities improved, their reputation for making delicious ice cream grew.
In 1996 the Lapps switched from Holsteins to Jersey cows to get a higher protein and fat content. In 2002, they built a new barn-sized ice-cream store on their farm with an expanded processing plant and a drive-up customer window. One of their sons, 36-year-old Dave Lapp, now manages the ice-cream manufacturing and retail store.
The farm’s spotless facilities and well-kept lawns are open for visitors to wander year-round to view the 75 or so Jerseys that provide all the milk used in the dairy store. Besides hand-dipped cones and tubs of ice-cream, on-farm sales include pasteurized bottled milk and butter from the Lapp farm, as well as eggs and cheese from another local farm. Most of their bottled milk sales are via the drive-up window, said Dave. They also have four popular ice-cream stands at two local market venues.
Retail sales are good, and steadily growing each year, but the Lapps want to stay a small family business. “We’ve put a lot of emphasis on keeping a high-quality product,” said Dave, “with our own cows and our own farm. In today’s world you need to look for a niche market.” The Lapps turn down many requests to sell wholesale and to ship their products, said Dave, preferring to direct-market and remain within the capacity of the farm’s production.
Their 700-pound-capacity butter churn was custom-made by a local man two years ago, but much of their processing equipment comes from Agri-Service in Hagerstown, Md.
Because they insist on keeping a fresh product rather than storing ice-cream for long periods, one of Dave’s weekly challenges is balancing processing of the 350-400 gallons of milk produced daily so as not to run out of any particular item. The Lapps process on Mondays, cheap nfl jerseys can not only make you look more beautiful but Save your money. Wednesdays and Fridays with the milk coming straight into cooling tanks in the facility from the barn. “Keeping up with demand doesn’t happen without effort,” said Dave.

Learning the Business
Penn State’s ice-cream course came with high recommendations from the Lapp family and the Kilbys. “It’s definitely worth taking the Penn State course,” said Lisa Kilby. “Making ice-cream is a lot of chemistry.”
According to Lisa, “When we started making our recipe, I thought I could just take my grandmother’s ice-cream recipe and multiply it by 10.” However, she said that didn’t work because the result had too much cream and not enough solids. The emulsifiers are so important, said Kilby. Dave Lapp agreed: “Ice-cream is complex. The course gives you more of an understanding of the different components.”
Burli Hopkins attended Carpigiani’s ice-cream manufacturer course, which includes learning the use of their equipment.
Other farmers frequently ask Hopkin’s advice. He suggests keeping start-up costs as low as possible, and making sure to get the necessary paperwork together for the inspectors and officials who must sign off on it. Ironically, some of the same investors who turned Burli away initially with his ice-cream parlor business, are now coming back and calling him, he said.
Dave Lapp gets inquiries from other dairy farmers as well. He stressed that it can be a struggle to get a creamery started, There are plenty of R4 ds games available on the internet that could be downloaded and installed directly on to these cards.and that it takes a significant investment of time and money.
Several creameries said the ice-cream business helps pay the bills, but it isn’t easy. Several farmers expressed hopes for added income in the future as a result of their ice-cream ventures.

Marketing, Freshness
All the on-farm creameries agree that homemade freshness and good taste are their best marketing tools. For other marketing, Hopkins Family Creamery chose to advertise only with coupons and a website. Coupons provide instant advertising feedback when they are turned in at the ice-cream parlor, said Burli Hopkins.
Lapp Valley Farm is in a rural area, off the beaten path, but Dave Lapp said, “People like the idea of coming out to the farm,” and the steady flow of drive-up window traffic attests to that. Lapps also make their own fancy waffle cones inside the store daily, and the pleasing aroma is irresistible.
Being able to use fresh ingredients for flavorings, such as incorporating real strawberries and blueberries in season, is another way several of the creameries create a demand for their homemade ice-cream. The Kilbys give fun names to their ice-cream flavors, like Tractor Tracks, Cow Dough, Holstein Cream and Cowconut.
Each creamery mentioned the need to make visitors feel welcome by adding agritourism in varying degrees to provide what Lisa Kilby calls “a family destination.”
Most of these creameries allow customers to observe the cows, and even the milking parlor, up close, which requires keeping the facilities very clean and inviting. At Hopkins Farm Creamery, a lifesize wooden tractor and haywagon makes a unique kids’ jungle gym.
At Kilby Cream, a playground, animal area, ladybug garden and newly converted milkhouse/ceramic studio give kids activities. Kilby Cream also hosts special activities throughout the year, each connected to an ice-cream product, such as a fall corn maze, an Easter egg hunt, a Sundaes with Santa (in December), and ice-cream pies at Thanksgiving.

The All-Star guard made the remark Sunday before the annual charity basketball game he co-hosts with Alonzo Mourning. Standing at his locker before a group of reporters, Wade said: “There’s going to be times when we might lose cheap nfl jerseys can not only make you look more beautiful but Save your money.one, two games in a row, maybe two games, three games in a row, you never know. But it’s not going to be nothing but a couple basketball games lost and we’ll have to get back on track.” On Monday, before leaving on a flight to Los Angeles for some television appearances — he was previously booked to talk with Jay Leno — Wade issued an apology through the Heat. In the statement, Wade said: “In an interview yesterday, I attempted to explain how some people may view The hottest selling saints jerseys changes frequently over time.

Eat, drink and paint in … Yaletown?

Raw Canvas provides space to relax, wield a paintbrush and discover yourself

Raw Canvas is an oddity in the midst of the glam Yaletown gestalt.

This funky oasis reads artsy as well as Birkenstock Nation-y, with its squeaky wooden floors and comfy mismatched furniture. Did it lose its way en route to Main Street or Commercial Drive, maybe?

Proprietor Steve Merkley says being out of place is precisely the point, just like when he ran a yoga studio in the same neighbourhood. He and partner Paige Farachi planned it that way.

“We had a vision for this,” he says. “This” is a tapas and wine bar, plus an atelier-like space where non-artists can listen to music and paint with materials provided, or sign up for a painting class, or ask the artist-in-residence for painting tips.

“In a way, we’re all artists and While storing music and music videos on your R4 card you should ensure that you name the files properly.love to create. Community and building relationships is a big focus for us,” Merkley says.

The couple once lived in Hong Kong, where he taught yoga in a studio surrounded by commerce and industry. While there, they socialized and did their celebrating at a public art studio.

“The juxtaposition was really appreciated,” he says. “It brought in a spiritual element and the yoga studio created change. That’s the same reason I put a yoga studio in Yaletown. If any part of the city could really use a shot of self-discovery, it’s Yaletown. We’d like to break down expectations and walls.”

Raw Canvas doesn’t have much of a kitchen, so they bring in the food. Clearly it’s not a food-forward scene, but for nibbles, it’s perfectly fine. Gorilla Foods (the raw-foodist restaurant) provides some (didn’t I say it’s kinda Birkenstocky?) as do Nuba Lebanese restaurant and Aphrodite Organic Cafe (pies). The ingredients are local and organic, and a charcuterie menu features artisanal cheeses and cured meats. “We get a lot from Quebec, some from Europe. It’s about the energy of how things are made — how animals are treated, who handles the product — and supporting small farms.”

It’s working just as they’d hoped. Businesses come in about twice a week for team-building and bonding in the art studio.

“It’s a beautiful juxtaposition,” says Merkley. “There’s paint on the floor, girls in heels and skirts. They really let their guards down.”

A couple of glasses of wine (Earth-friendly organic or biodynamic) helps the guys pick up a brush and start playing with paint, he says. “No one gets hammered, but it breaks the inhibitions.”

It’s not art for selling, he says. “I’d pay you to take my work. But we love the process. We understand, as yogis, there’s an element of meet-yourself in the process of standing in front of a blank canvas. Hopefully, you grow.”

Canvasses cost $45 to $105, depending on size, and paint, brushes, smocks and cleanup are free. They’re planning to make clothing or bags from the painted canvases people leave behind.

When I visited one evening, a wine rep was holding a tasting for a group. The menu is really for grazing in an easygoing atmosphere.

Thai fresh wraps, a raw vegan dish, has a squeaky clean taste. Collard leaves wrap around sprouted sunflower seeds and veggie pate, and are served with ginger raisin chutney. It’s not often my teeth feel cleaner after I eat something.

Baba ghanoush (vegan) was nice and garlicky and served with good-quality pita. You can assemble your own tasting plate of cheese and cured meats for $15 (three meats/cheeses and three condiments).

Brebiou sheep cheese, Twins jerseys and triplets may or may not look alike, but their personalities are their own individual selves frorosette de Lyon (a French-style salami) and pheasant and pistachio terrine with pear cardamom confit, lime and honey mustard and cipollini onions made for great nibbling.

When we visited, paintings by cheap nfl jerseys can not only make you look more beautiful but Save your money.resident artist Yared Nigussu were on exhibit and I loved the bold, raw portraits; he gives art classes How does one find college jerseys that are suitable for their cars? A lot of people would hesitate to buy parts from recyclers becausa couple times a week.

“The men, especially, need a bit of wine [before they'll start painting], but then they become free and happy,” says Merkley. “After an hour or two, they’re like children. We know how healing it is to forget about stresses of finances, work, relationships.”

The mission might be earnest and ethereal, but customers, I’d say, go for the fun. When I visited, there was music and art and a large table of friends who’d signed up for a wine-tasting session, and they certainly weren’t ponderously philosophical.

, big-ticket items; things that many people want, but may not be able to afford.

So, in this day and age, police say, some people just help themselves. Call it the five-finger discount, if you will.

One man helped himself to the most expensive sunglasses money can buy back on Saturday, July 10th around 3:00 p.m., Tampa Police say.

A light-skinned man, possibly Hispanic with dark hair, walked into International Plaza wearing a How does one find college jerseys that are suitable for their cars? A lot of people would hesitate to buy parts from recyclers becauswhite t-shirt, blue jeans, white athletic shoes and a large designer watch on his left wrist.

He walked right into Louis Vuitton on a busy Saturday, although, there was something a little odd about this “shopper,” police tell us.

He kept pacing around and not making any purchases. After a while, he started talking with an associate, and then made his move.

You can see him on video actually picking While storing music and music videos on your R4 card you should ensure that you name the files properly.up a pair of sunglasses costing nearly $700. You see him pick up the glasses, shove them into his pocket and walk away.

Oh, and did we mention he craned his neck to see if anyone was watching?

“It’s phenomenal video. Someone’s going to recognize him in the video,” says Tampa Police Spokesperson Andrea Davis.

But, the crime spree didn’t stop there. It also happened at Westshore Plaza just down the street, a little less than a month earlier on June 16th. This time with a different man – same motive.

Only this time, the crime happened with a slight twist.

Police say an African American man was seen using a counterfeit credit card in the name of Gregory Baxter of Deputy, Indiana.

The man charged more than $6,000 worth of jewelry and clothing,Every fan likes Pittsburgh Steelers jersey. Some people realize that there are far more other things which they can splurge on. cheap nfl jerseys can not only make you look more beautiful but Save your money.according to police. The largest purchases were two Gucci watches valued at $5,440.

The man seen in the video is in his mid 20’s to late 30’s. He has a dark complexion and appears to be slightly overweight, police say with short hair and a mustache, possibly a goatee.

Davis says, “That’s what’s definitely concerning. You wonder why someone is so bold to walk into a store like this when they know they’re captured on video.”
