After graduating in the late 1980s, she worked at a series of technology companies.

“It’s a little edgier, but it still describes how I feel about working in this business — happy and peaceful,” she commented.

China’s Auto Market Keeps Booming

In my opening remarks, I took the opportunity to comment on the disconnect between auto sales and gasoline consumption, China’s commercial vehicle market and vehicle exports.

In discussing the first topic, I reiterated what I covered in my recent post, China’s Inkfish Dilemma, about the disconnect between rising auto sales and the comparatively flat demand for gasoline. Therefore, I will not repeat what I said then, except to remind everyone to remember the inkfish–agricultural vehicles–when trying to understand China’s auto industry.

I also advised the audience to remember commercial vehicles. Passenger sales tend to receive all of the attention, but the mundane business of trucks and buses is a big industry in China. Of the 13.6 million vehicles produced and sold in China in 2009, 8.4 million were passenger cars, but 5.3 million were trucks and buses. Poor economic conditions in 2009 caused China’s vehicle exports to fall further to 332,000 units in 2009, but we are now seeing a rebound from those levels. Vehicle exports during the first quarter were 106,000, up 52% over last year.

As the developing economies of the world recover–former Soviet bloc countries and countries in the Middle East, Africa and Southeast Asia–they become natural markets for cars, trucks and buses made in China.
