For the Sport: All-Star game shows sports’ dichotomy

Sports can often provide an example of the good things – and the bad – that permeate our society.

For children and teenagers, sports can help teach selflessness, teamwork, hard work, dedication, respect and good sportsmanship.

Occasionally, some athletes reach professional levels and lose these traits.

If anything it was something I expected from the fans, and that’s a sad indictment of crowd behavior in today’s sports climate.

But it’s disappointing when in an exhibition contest honoring the amazing accomplishments these players have achieved, fans can’t simply give a little recognition to the players.

MLB even brought all 30 people to Anaheim, giving them jerseys of the teams they were chosen from and honored them in the middle of the field after the All Star rosters were announced.

That would have been more than enough.

Excessive focus on sports can lead to many of the worst attributes in society such as self-centeredness, a belief in entitlement and a lack of understanding of what is truly important.

What MLB did with this showcase of everyday All-Stars was to show that they cared, they appreciated and they were thankful for everything these individuals do outside of the sports world.

Maybe, one day, these values the ‘All-Stars Among Us’ hope to build outside the ball parks will once again become the norm for player and fan actions inside as well.

SanFilippo: Nelson has star attitude to match game

SPRINGFIELD — The dichotomy was delicious. There was Jameer Nelson, the epitome of an overachiever, told from the time he was in the Chester Biddy League that he was too small to ever be good at the game of basketball.

And there, staring right back at him, were a few hundred hopeful eyes, still dreaming to one day reach the heights that Nelson has achieved.

So when Nelson, now a budding star with the Orlando Magic in the NBA, stepped to the podium as the guest speaker in the 24th annual banquet at the Springfield Country Club Tuesday, the first thing he said was, “I think we need a recount of that vote from 10 years ago.”

Considering how things turned out, he’s probably right, and probably should have won — if not for his ability but for his combination of flawless character and unrivaled determination to succeed.

It’s what makes Nelson special. He didn’t have to be where he was Tuesday. He had recently completed a grueling NBA season that saw him miss time for the second-straight season with an injury — this time to his knee.

But he was there. It was never a problem. And his message was as modest and unassuming as his personality but it packed a certifiable punch — stay in school, get good grades, continue to work hard at your sports and never — ever — let your talent or ability make you think you are better than everyone else. Instead, do the opposite, and assume there is always someone better and do your best to keep up.

No matter the situation. No matter the adversity. No matter how big a challenge or how daunting a task, Nelson preached maintaining professionalism.

“I pride myself on that,” Nelson said. “Outside of your sport and outside of your home town it’s still the same no matter where you go. Be a professional.”
