Eat, drink and paint in … Yaletown?

Raw Canvas provides space to relax, wield a paintbrush and discover yourself

Raw Canvas is an oddity in the midst of the glam Yaletown gestalt.

This funky oasis reads artsy as well as Birkenstock Nation-y, with its squeaky wooden floors and comfy mismatched furniture. Did it lose its way en route to Main Street or Commercial Drive, maybe?

Proprietor Steve Merkley says being out of place is precisely the point, just like when he ran a yoga studio in the same neighbourhood. He and partner Paige Farachi planned it that way.

“We had a vision for this,” he says. “This” is a tapas and wine bar, plus an atelier-like space where non-artists can listen to music and paint with materials provided, or sign up for a painting class, or ask the artist-in-residence for painting tips.

“In a way, we’re all artists and While storing music and music videos on your R4 card you should ensure that you name the files properly.love to create. Community and building relationships is a big focus for us,” Merkley says.

The couple once lived in Hong Kong, where he taught yoga in a studio surrounded by commerce and industry. While there, they socialized and did their celebrating at a public art studio.

“The juxtaposition was really appreciated,” he says. “It brought in a spiritual element and the yoga studio created change. That’s the same reason I put a yoga studio in Yaletown. If any part of the city could really use a shot of self-discovery, it’s Yaletown. We’d like to break down expectations and walls.”

Raw Canvas doesn’t have much of a kitchen, so they bring in the food. Clearly it’s not a food-forward scene, but for nibbles, it’s perfectly fine. Gorilla Foods (the raw-foodist restaurant) provides some (didn’t I say it’s kinda Birkenstocky?) as do Nuba Lebanese restaurant and Aphrodite Organic Cafe (pies). The ingredients are local and organic, and a charcuterie menu features artisanal cheeses and cured meats. “We get a lot from Quebec, some from Europe. It’s about the energy of how things are made — how animals are treated, who handles the product — and supporting small farms.”

It’s working just as they’d hoped. Businesses come in about twice a week for team-building and bonding in the art studio.

“It’s a beautiful juxtaposition,” says Merkley. “There’s paint on the floor, girls in heels and skirts. They really let their guards down.”

A couple of glasses of wine (Earth-friendly organic or biodynamic) helps the guys pick up a brush and start playing with paint, he says. “No one gets hammered, but it breaks the inhibitions.”

It’s not art for selling, he says. “I’d pay you to take my work. But we love the process. We understand, as yogis, there’s an element of meet-yourself in the process of standing in front of a blank canvas. Hopefully, you grow.”

Canvasses cost $45 to $105, depending on size, and paint, brushes, smocks and cleanup are free. They’re planning to make clothing or bags from the painted canvases people leave behind.

When I visited one evening, a wine rep was holding a tasting for a group. The menu is really for grazing in an easygoing atmosphere.

Thai fresh wraps, a raw vegan dish, has a squeaky clean taste. Collard leaves wrap around sprouted sunflower seeds and veggie pate, and are served with ginger raisin chutney. It’s not often my teeth feel cleaner after I eat something.

Baba ghanoush (vegan) was nice and garlicky and served with good-quality pita. You can assemble your own tasting plate of cheese and cured meats for $15 (three meats/cheeses and three condiments).

Brebiou sheep cheese, Twins jerseys and triplets may or may not look alike, but their personalities are their own individual selves frorosette de Lyon (a French-style salami) and pheasant and pistachio terrine with pear cardamom confit, lime and honey mustard and cipollini onions made for great nibbling.

“The men, especially, need a bit of wine [before they'll start painting], but then they become free and happy,” says Merkley. “After an hour or two, they’re like children. We know how healing it is to forget about stresses of finances, work, relationships.”

The mission might be earnest and ethereal, but customers, I’d say, go for the fun. When I visited, there was music and art and a large table of friends who’d signed up for a wine-tasting session, and they certainly weren’t ponderously philosophical.

Jersey Swaps, a Ritual With a Story

The United States had lost to Brazil, 1-0, in the 2003 Confederations Cup, but when the final whistle blew that night in Lyon, France, the American defender Gregg Berhalter walked off the field with a memento from a tough night.

In his hand, Berhalter carried the jersey he had exchanged with a bucktoothed Brazilian midfielder who would become known worldwide, Ronaldinho.

When Berhalter recalled that night recently, it was with a heavy helping of wistfulness ¡ª and not for losing the ball that led to the game¡¯s only goal. A few days after the game, at a hotel in Paris, where Ronaldinho was then the well-known star for Paris St.-Germain, Berhalter sent his dirty clothes out to be cleaned. Into the bag, he absentmindedly tossed the iconic yellow and green Brazil jersey.

¡°Needless to say, it never came back from the laundry,¡± Berhalter said with a knowing smile. ¡°I wasn¡¯t too smart.¡±

The exchanging of jerseys at the end of a soccer match is a longtime ritual that is well established in the sport, even as it has evolved. With each swap ¡ª like the ones that take place after games in this World Cup ¡ª there is usually a story.

Often the tales are personal, speaking to a player¡¯s standing in the game or marking a chapter in his career.

As for the jerseys themselves, sometimes they are washed, sometimes not. Sometimes they end up being given away, auctioned off, framed for display in a player¡¯s home, boxed up in storage, or ¡ª as Berhalter learned ¡ª who knows where?

¡°It¡¯s just a sign of respect,¡± said Clint Mathis, who scored for the In our life choose a Comfortable jersey is very important, click here nfl jerseys sale.United States in the 2002 World Cup. ¡°You¡¯re out there trying to kick each other and kill each other, but when the game¡¯s said and done, it¡¯s back to being friends.¡±

The gentlemanly ritual is believed to have begun in 1931, when France beat England for the first time. The French players were so ecstatic they asked the English players if they could have their jerseys as keepsakes. The English obliged.

It was not until 1954 that exchanges took place at a World Cup, according to FIFA.com, but one of the more memorable moments in the ritual was an exchange that did not take place.

In 1966, England defeated Argentina, 1-0, in the quarterfinals, but the play was so vicious that when England¡¯s manager, Alf Ramsey, who had referred to Argentina¡¯s players as animals, spotted one of his players exchanging jerseys with an Argentine, he stepped in and yanked the jersey away.

That image remains as much a part of the rivalry between the countries as Diego Maradona¡¯s Hand of God goal and David Beckham¡¯s red card in 1998.

¡°Ramsey¡¯s intervention was hugely symbolic,¡± said Ellis Cashmore, a professor of sociology, media and sport at England¡¯s Staffordshire University. ¡°Exchange rituals are freighted with cultural functions, such as reinforcing social solidarity, affirming friendships and perpetuating economic partnerships.¡±

There are few friendships affirmed when the United States and Mexico play, which explains why jerseys are rarely exchanged in that rivalry. In the 2002 World Cup, the United States shocked Mexico, knocking it out of the tournament in a rough-and-tumble match.

¡°Especially after that game ¡ª I don¡¯t think one jersey was exchanged,¡± Berhalter said. ¡°There was a lot of bad blood in that game. That was one time when sportsmanship really didn¡¯t take a priority.¡±

Cashmore compared the exchanges to kula, a system of ceremonial gift exchange Twins jerseys and triplets may or may not look alike, but their personalities are their own individual selves frothat he said precedes formal trading in the Trobriand Islands in the Southwest Pacific. Kula ¡°kept what might otherwise have been fractious relations peaceful,¡± Cashmore said. ¡°Shirt exchanges have comparable functions.¡±

Over the last two decades, soccer has evolved from strictly sport How does one find vikings jerseys that are suitable for their cars? A lot of people would hesitate to buy parts from recyclers becausto, Cashmore said, a division of the entertainment industry. Players like Beckham, Lionel Messi, Cristiano Ronaldo, Wayne Rooney and Ronaldinho are worldwide brands as much as they are soccer stars.

Thus, some jerseys can be more than keepsakes ¡ª they can be commodities. The Brazil jersey worn by Pel¨¦ in the 1970 World Cup was sold in 2002 by the family of the Italian player he had traded with for $310,000.

Nigel Spill, a sports memorabilia dealer in Los Angeles, said a game-worn jersey of a player like Messi, the reigning world player of the year, would be comparable to what a Derek Jeter jersey In our life choose a Comfortable jersey is very important, click here wholesale jerseys.would fetch, easily into five figures. ¡°It¡¯s not an innocent jersey swap anymore,¡± Spill said.

The oriental class of 2010 at Graduate Fashion Week

The oriental class of 2010 at Graduate Fashion Week

It’s Graduate Fashion Week, but fashion students have been It is important for you to know how to match your clothes with different Pandora beads.graduating since Central Saint Martins’s MA show in March. Sitting at these shows, you try to patch together future trends from what you see – and this year, I’m beginning to see a huge trend. Every time I glance down to check who has done what, another Asian-sounding name jumps out. Ten or more years ago, it was the Japanese who were coming to learn in But he emerged to be the true leader of his team in this recent run, making Roethlisberger steelers jerseys more popular than ever before.London. Now, as far as Back in the day the only personalized jerseys that you would be able to find were maybe some bumper stickers. Today there are all kinds of accessforeign students go, it is aspiring Chinese and Korean designers who are being turned out by this country’s fashion schools in unmissable numbers.

Only five years ago, I remember fashion people in the West speculating that perhaps China and the new booming Asian economies might “one day†produce a designer worth taking notice of – after all, they were revving up their clothing factories to bring fast, cheap fashion to the world. If you do, perhaps you know evisu jeans are parts of quarter turn valves or rotary valves. Now, to judge from our top fashion institutions, that day has come faster than anyone anticipated.

At Central Saint Martins, it is more noticeable than ever. This is hardly surprising. The acknowledged world standard-bearer for excellence in fashion education, Central Saint Martins can recruit high-paying foreign students (an international student pays a total of £36,750 in fees, as opposed to £9,870 for UK and EU students). This year, the top prizes and accolades in both the MA and BA degree courses have been swept by Chinese and Koreans. At the MA level, Jung Sun Lee’s minimal jersey tailoring has been snapped up by Harrods, where it will be sold this autumn, while Rok Hwang has been hired to work at Céline. They are both from South Korea. At the BA show, a Chinese-born designer, Yi Fang Wan, scooped the L’Oréal Professionnel prize after impressing judges with her sensitive collection of softly coloured silks and linen.

All this makes me wonder whether, within a couple of years, London will be like New York, where Alexander Wang, Jason Wu, Phillip Lim, Joseph Altuzarra and Derek Lam – all with Asian backgrounds – have swiftly taken over as the 21st-century new guard of American fashion.

The Case for the Mets to Keep Tejada

The Case for the Mets to Keep Tejada

For weeks, Mets Manager Jerry Manuel and General Manager Omar Minaya have been asked questions about the injured pitchers John Maine and Oliver Perez. Neither has seriously addressed the questions, suggesting the Mets are eager for their return, when in fact the team has performed better without them.

Luis Castillo’s name can be added to that list. Castillo was playing adequately before he was injured, but Ruben Tejada, the precocious 20-year-old rookie infielder, has filled in seamlessly at second. After Tejada’s tactical decision at shortstop Friday helped the Mets beat the Washington Nationals, 5-3, Manuel said he would argue to keep him on the 25-man roster when Castillo returns.

“I would definitely fight for him,†Manuel said.

Castillo, who is recovering from a strained right heel, is expected back soon after the All-Star break. But Tejada has shown that he has the savvy and the instincts to be the Mets’ second baseman of the future. He could also easily slide over to shortstop to back up Jose Reyes, and could round out a talented, young core of David Wright, Reyes, Ike Davis and eventually Josh Thole.

Tejada is a natural shortstop, but asked Friday if he would be happy to play second nfl jerseys cheap can not only make you look more beautiful but Save yourmoney.base for, say, the next 10 years, he smiled and said he would be delighted.

“I want to play anywhere,†he said.

In the It is impossible for ordinary people to buy expensive Ed hardy hats.critical moment of Friday’s game, Tejada’s presence of mind helped the Mets escape a tight spot in the ninth. With the potential tying run on first base and Roger Bernadina on second in the ninth Friday, Tejada had a feeling.

Forest Service Rules to Address ATV Disputes

Forest Service Rules to Address ATV Disputes Gerald Winer knows how he’d like to handle the all-terrain riders who transform his grated road and woods into a quagmire of muddy ruts and ridges. He’d take a sledgehammer to their machines. That’s what he did As with any collectible, nfl jerseys cheap also have dispersed markets in the nfl shop: one for the authentic jerseys and one for the replicaswhen he got a call from a neighbor eight years ago letting him know that his teenage son had done donuts on the neighbor’s field and ruined some crops. Winer says his punishment taught his son a lesson. But now he feels powerless against the groups of ATV riders who roar through his 53 acres in Dunbarton, N.H. “They’ve run my dog off the road, my wife off the road. They’re cutting trees, starting fires, leaving trash,” he said. “I have 53 acres that was once pristine, now it’s ruined.” Dealing with trespassing and damage on private lands is up to landowners and local governments to handle. Some time this summer, the Service is expected to release a new set of regulations for off-road vehicles that they hope will offer a truce between those who like their nature quiet and those who enjoy experiencing the outdoors on four wheels. “This is not an easy issue to tackle, but if we wait a day, a cheap nfl jerseys can not only make you look more beautiful but Save your money.week or even a year, the impact on the lands and the issues surrounding the problem will become even harder to deal with,” U.S. Forest Service Chief Dale Bosworth said last year.
